AHS Band and Chorus

The Attleboro High School Bands and Choruses are the main performing ensembles in the Music Department at AHS.  Ensembles include:  Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Marching Band, Mixed Chorus, Women's Choir and Select Choir.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

BAND (7.5 CREDITS)

The Band is a performing organization designed to give students musical training through the rehearsal and performance of good representative band literature. Students are required to practice every day, and private lessons are encouraged. Special rehearsals are held after school and occasionally in the evening. Through enrollment in band class, students are automatically considered members of the Marching Band.  Students are required to participate in marching band unless there are significant medical reasons that keep them from meeting the physical requirements of the activity.  Participation in special rehearsals and all performances (football games, concerts and parades) is required. A band camp is held during the summer to prepare for fall activities. 
 

MARCHING BAND (1.25 CREDITS FOR STUDENTS NOT ENROLLED IN BAND CLASS)

The Marching Band is a performing organization that represents AHS during football games, community events and parades.  Participation in marching band is required for all students enrolled in band class unless there are significant medical reasons that keep them from meeting the physical requirements of the activity.  Students who are not enrolled in band class but would like to participate in marching band may perform in the ensemble and receive 1.25 credits for their after school participation in the group.  Auxiliary members such as Majorettes and Color Guard members will also receive the 1.25 credits.  Attendance at all after school rehearsals, football games, community events and parades is mandatory.

JAZZ ENSEMBLE (1.25 CREDITS)

This course is designed to be a performing ensemble. Students will study and perform 1940s big band, swing, jazz, rock, and other forms of popular music. Instrumentation in this group is limited and is open to all students by audition. Students must be able to read music and have reached either an intermediate or advanced level of development. Practice outside of class and participation at all performances is required.
 

PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE (1.25 CREDITS)

This course is designed to be both a learning and performance ensemble. Students will study and perform music written for percussion ensembles. The group is open to all students. Practice outside of class and participation in all performances is required.

MIXED CHORUS (7.5 CREDITS) 

Mixed Chorus (SATB) is for students in all grades. This course teaches skills necessary for the performance of representative choral literature. Students must be able to match pitch. Chorus is a performing organization. Participation in special rehearsals and at all concerts is required. Space permitting, students are able to take both Band and Mixed Chorus.

WOMEN'S CHOIR (5 CREDITS)

Women’s Choir is a performing organization designed to give students musical training through the rehearsal and performance of good representative choral literature. Students are expected to practice outside of class. Special rehearsals are occasionally held after school and in the evening. Participation at all special rehearsals and performances is required. Students must be able to match pitch.

 

SELECT CHOIR (1.25 CREDITS)

This course is designed to be a select vocal ensemble. Students will perform representative literature that reflects the size and make up of the group. The group is open to all students by audition only. A high level of musicianship is expected and students must be prepared to practice outside of class time. Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is required.
