Grade 10 MCAS

We will be administering the ELA MCAS test on Tuesday, March 28 and Wednesday, March 29.   Testing will begin for both tests at 7:30 AM.  In preparation for this test, here are a few timely reminders:

  • MCAS counts! It is a graduation requirement. Demonstrating competency on MCAS is one of the state requirements for receiving a high school diploma. Do your best.

  • Bring your Chromebook. Students have school-issued Chromebooks and they must bring them fully charged on each testing day. It is also recommended that students bring their chargers.

Sophomores:  We believe you all have the ability to be successful on this test. Your teachers have worked hard to prepare you for this moment, and we’re sure that you have worked hard as well. Being successful on this test is a way for you to demonstrate BLUE PRIDE to yourself, your family, your teachers, and the whole school community. We all believe in you!

Sophomores: Here is a list of test room locations: Grade 10 ELA MCAS Room Assignments.

Honors Diploma

Seniors who indicated that they were interested in applying for the honors diploma were emailed the application last week. For your convenience, here is the form: 2023 Honors Diploma Application. The deadline to complete this form is Sunday, March 26, at 11:59 pm.

Appeals

Grade 9-11 students who need to appeal level placements (typically these students requested an honors or AP course) were emailed an appeals application form last week. For your convenience, her is the form: Appeals 2023. Many of the requested data points can be found in Aspen, and there is also a space to share additional information.  Students should fill-out the form completely and to the best of their ability because there will be no opportunity for second appeals. The deadline to submit the form is March 26, 2023 at 11:59 pm.

Cellular Reception

Recently we have heard some concerns regarding cellular service at AHS. In hearing these concerns, we wanted to share some information with you. To start, data “blockers” or “jammers,” which interfere with authorized radio communications such as cell phones, police radar, GPS, and Wi-Fi, are a violation of federal law. AHS does not use them. Issues with cell reception at AHS are a consequence of our new school. Building materials used in modern construction, such as steel, concrete, and low-e glass can potentially affect signal strength. Furthermore, our school’s designers have explained that “the exterior envelope of the building is thermally tight, which further reduces cell phone signal strength.” Please refer to THIS ARTICLE to find out more regarding compromised signal strength. Additionally, concerns have been raised that if students experience problems with cell reception will emergency responders have similar troubles in a potential crisis? Emphatically the answer is: “No.” Police and Fire have access to specialized equipment to ensure their secure communication in responding to any emergency.
